A London borough has been criticised for ignoring its own advice and failing to complete an investigation into how it supports children with disabilities.
Following a complaint by the mother of a disabled child, Waltham Forest agreed to undertake a review of its support for children with disabilities.
The council then failed to mention this decision to the mother and even failed to complete the review, prompting the mother to inform the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGSO).
Ms Amerdeep Somal, LGSO, investigated the case and concluded that this was a ‘missed opportunity’ for the council to improve its services.
Responding to the Ombudsman’s findings, Cllr Kizzy Gardiner, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, apologised ‘unreservedly’ to the mother.
‘We accept the ombudsman’s findings, and we are currently in the process of delivering enhanced training for officers and reviewing our internal processes in response,’ she added.
