More needs to be done to share data and improve communications with councils, Home Office mandarins have admitted.
Top officials from the department faced a grilling from the Home Affairs Select Committee yesterday.
Committee member Kim Johnson pressed officials on the lack of co-ordination with local authorities.
Interim second permanent secretary Simon Ridley said regional discussions were being held and work was under way to share more data, including the number of asylum seekers and refugees.
He told the committee: ‘There’s unquestionably more we can and need to do.
'There’s scope to deepen those [discussions] and share more data.'
