The Government has committed to creating the first strategy for men’s health – something council bosses have been calling for.
It will set out plans to tackle the biggest health problems facing men, including cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer and testicular cancer, and will consider how to prevent suicides and improve men’s mental health.
A call for evidence will seek views on what needs to be done to close the life expectancy gap between men and women.
Announcing the plans today, health secretary Wes Streeting said: ‘Just as we are determined to end the injustices women face in healthcare, we won’t shy away from the need to focus on men’s health too.’
A strategy for women's health in England was published in 2022.
The chairman of the Local Government Association’s community wellbeing board, David Fothergill, said: ‘We are very pleased the secretary of state has announced a men’s health strategy, which the LGA has been calling for.
‘Innovative local initiatives led by councils are making strides, but national action is needed which recognises men’s health as a national concern.’
