Cumberland Council is trialling artificial intelligence CCTV cameras in Carlisle in a bid to crack down on littering.
The pilot scheme will see a camera installed at a known littering hotspot, using AI technology to detect vehicle number plates and capture evidence of waste being thrown from vehicles. Any driver caught littering faces a £150 Civil Penalty Notice.
The cameras are also capable of detecting other environmental offences, including dog fouling and fly-tipping.
If the trial proves successful, the council will consider rolling out the technology to other hotspots across Cumberland.
Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, Cllr Denise Rollo, said the trial would explore how innovative technology can help hold those responsible to account, adding: ‘Littering and environmental crime will not be tolerated in Cumberland.’
