The Government is still ‘reviewing the recruitment process for levelling up directors’ despite appointing an ex-Number 10 official to a role with the same title.

Ed Whiting, a former deputy principal private secretary to David Cameron, started as a ‘director in the levelling up policy group’ at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) in Leeds this week.

In a tweet Mr Whiting said details around his new job would be confirmed ‘as we go’ but it was likely to have a ‘big focus’ working with authorities and organisations across the North on ‘economic growth and prosperity’.

A DLUHC spokesperson said: ‘We are reviewing the recruitment process for levelling up directors internally, as well as our wider approach to working with places across the country.’

The department did not say where Mr Whiting – who has been director of policy and chief of staff at the Wellcome Trust charity since leaving Whitehall in 2016 – would fit into its structure.
