Kirklees MBC councillors called for a fair funding review to be carried out urgently as they discussed measures to avoid a section 114 notice.

The council faces a £48m funding gap for next year’s budget, with use of reserves ruled out as an option.

Kirklees is heading for a £20m overspend this year, which threatens to deplete its reserves - meaning cuts are the only option to balance next year’s budget.

A report attributed the overspend to the cost of living crisis, shortfalls in income and rising demand pressures, particularly in children’s services.

The report warned a s114 notice would follow if cost saving measures failed to balance next year’s books.
