Birmingham City Council is poised to reveal a worse-than-expected financial position as it embarks on a savings drive and ‘inevitable’ job cuts, The MJ has learned.

Senior sources at the authority, which is currently subject to hefty Government intervention, have revealed an intervention finance board meeting scheduled for today will expose an even worse financial situation than previously reported.

Birmingham’s treasurer and section 151 officer Fiona Greenway is due to attend the meeting alongside Government-appointed commissioners and is expected to reveal that the council’s financial position has deteriorated due to soaring costs since its emergency planning began.

Last week, commissioners at Birmingham warned that the council would struggle to agree a lawful budget next year without further help.
