Labour-run local authorities could face legal action if they pursue boycotts against Israel, Communities Secretary Steve Reed has warned.

Several councils have passed motions to boycott companies they believe are complicit in alleged Israeli war crimes. However, Reed has cautioned that such actions may breach existing Government guidance and procurement law.

Speaking over the weekend, the Communities Secretary pointed to guidance issued in 2016, which states that ‘boycotts in public procurement are inappropriate, outside where formal legal sanctions, embargoes and restrictions have been put in place by the UK Government.’

Reed warned that councils choosing to boycott firms linked to Israel could be exposed to legal challenges under the Procurement Act 2023.

‘Councils should stay out of foreign conflicts and get on with the job of delivering local services,’ he said.
