Oxford City Council members have passed a motion reaffirming the council's ‘ethical duty’ to avoid trade with countries violating international law against the background of the war in Gaza.
Brought by independent councillors, the motion urges the council to strengthen ethical procurement and investment policies and reaffirm its commitment to human rights.
The motion references successive rulings by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) made in relation to the war in Gaza reminding states of their ‘obligation to actively avoid complicity in Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine and grave violations of human rights.’
It was also noted during the debate that the council acted swiftly in response to Russia’s violations of international law.
Cllr Barbara Coyne, who proposed the motion, said: ‘I hope this motion will be thoroughly implemented, and that its passage may pave the way for other councils to take decisive action.’
The council resolved to ‘strengthen our investment and procurement’ policies to reaffirm the local authority’s commitment to human rights and international law.
