Milder winters and fiscal pressures have prompted Dudley Council to consider stopping the introduction of any new grit bins.

The council is reviewing its winter maintenance programme as part of its effort to make £41m of savings next year.

It says the milder winters and the reduction in the number of residents using grit has led them to temporarily cease the introduction of new bins.

Cllr Damian Corfield, cabinet member for Highways and Environmental Services, said: ‘Like most local authorities, we face a challenging fiscal climate and we are having to prioritise spend to make savings of £41m next year to ensure we can balance the books and deliver the most critical services for our residents.’

He added that no grit bin would be removed during this winter season.
