Budget 2020: 'Record’ £5bn broadband investment for hardest to reach areas

Chancellor Rishi Sunak today announced in the Budget a ‘record’ £5bn investment to get gigabit-capable broadband into the hardest to reach parts of the UK.

He also said funding for the Shared Rural Network agreement would ‘radically improve mobile coverage in rural areas’.

In a tweet yesterday, the chancellor called this a commitment to the ‘largest ever public investment into UK broadband’.

In the tweet, he said it would be ’40 times faster than standard superfast and available in the most difficult to reach areas’.
