The Government has announced £220m for councils to prevent families from becoming homeless and provide support for people sleeping rough.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) said the funding was targeted towards the areas most in need.

The DLUHC said it had ‘partnered with councils to design tailored support for the issues in their area’.

The funding includes £107m for councils to buy or rent properties for people who have been sleeping rough and £6m to provide more off-street spaces for people sleeping rough in winter.

The homelessness prevention grant also received a £109m boost, to be used by councils to prevent evictions, fund temporary accommodation and support Ukrainians into settled accommodation.

The Local Government Association’s housing spokesperson, Darren Rodwell, said the extra prevention grant funding was a ‘positive step towards tackling the homelessness pressures facing councils’.

However, he added: ‘Building more genuinely affordable homes remains the best way to help families struggling to meet housing costs, provide homes to rent, reduce homelessness and tackle council housing waiting lists in the long term.’
