Unite members are set to protest Birmingham City Council’s leader at this year’s Local Government Association (LGA) conference as part of the ongoing bin strikes, says the trade union.

The industrial action began in January over a pay dispute impacting former Waste Recycling Collection Officers and bin lorry drivers.

Unite insists Cllr John Cotton should return to Birmingham and join negotiations to end the dispute.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: ‘It’s time John Cotton stepped up, entered the room, and resolved this dispute.’

She added: 'The protest should also put other councils attending the LGA conference on notice if they are thinking of trying to get workers to pay for mistakes made by politicians: Unite will be relentless in the fightback.’

The trade union recently warned that the strikes ‘could last until December’.

The council has been contacted for comment.
