Refuse collection workers in Birmingham have rejected the city council’s latest pay offer in the long-running waste management dispute.

The trade union Unite argues the current pay offer will lead to pay cuts for workers that amount to £8,000 a year and could still affect the pay packets of 200 drivers.

A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said the union's decision was 'incredibly disappointing' adding that the offer was 'fair and reasonable'.

Commenting on the vote, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: ‘The rejection of the offer is no surprise as these workers simply cannot afford to take pay cuts of this magnitude to pay the price for bad decision after bad decision.’

Military planners were recently called in to help tackle the build of rubbish on the streets of Birmingham.
