Tower Hamlets appeals for more white foster carers

Tower Hamlets LBC is calling for more people from white communities to put themselves forward as foster carers.

One of the most ethnically diverse boroughs in the country, Tower Hamlets has highlighted a shortage of foster carers among its white community.

During national foster care fortnight, the council, which helps more than 200 children find a foster home every year, launched a campaign to recruit another 25 carers. It believes it is preferable to place a child in a family of the same ethnic background.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, paid tribute to the work carried out by the borough's foster carers and called for more residents to step forward.

The Premier League football club, West Ham United, this week lent its support to Newham LBC's fostering campaign.

The council will place a message in West Ham's final match-day programme of the season calling on supporters to consider themselves as foster carers.

Club captain Kevin Nolan said: 'We massively support this campaign at West Ham United. If more people can come forward to foster, then it will mean lots more children may have the chance to experience a loving home and get to enjoy a safe and happy life that they deserve.'
