Campaign group TaxPayers’ Alliance has published its annual ‘town hall rich list’ today as it continues to raise the issue of public sector pay.

The list shows that 3,106 council staff in the UK received total remuneration of at least £100,000 in 2022-23, the second highest figure since the list began in 2007.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance said this is equivalent to an average of nine employees receiving at least £100,000 per council.

In 2022-23, 175 local authority employees received more than £200,000 in total remuneration.

TaxPayers' Alliance chief executive John O’Connell said: ‘Local authorities provide crucial services and residents will want to make sure they are getting bang for their buck with their ever-increasing bills.

‘Residents can use these figures to ask whether precious funds are really going towards frontline services, or whether town hall bosses can get better value for money.’

The Local Government Association noted that senior pay is decided by councillors.

An LGA spokesperson added: ‘Councils are large, complex organisations with sizeable budgets.

‘It is important that the right people with the right skills and experience are retained to deliver this important work.’
