Somerset Council has announced that there will be compulsory redundancies across its workforce, with 450 posts at risk.
The unitary authority, which declared a financial emergency in November, has said it must restructure to save £30m-40m by April.
It has launched a 45-day consultation on the job cuts with trade unions and staff.
The council said: ‘While the size of the workforce will reduce, we will continue to protect and provide essential services for our residents, communities and businesses, while continuing to lobby government for fairer funding.
‘Restructuring will be complex and it will involve some incredibly hard decisions, but it will help to create future organisational and financial stability while providing clarity for staff on the future council structure and roles, and ensure we have an affordable staffing budget from April 2025.’
