Staff at Shropshire Council have been offered voluntary redundancy as part of the local authority's plans to lose 300 full time jobs.

The unitary authority, which employs around 3,500 people, said it needs to find £62m in savings in the next financial year.

Council leader Lezley Picton said savings plans include ‘making sure we are the right size as an organisation to meet our costs with the money we have’.

She said: ‘We have been clear that this means we will be a smaller organisation with fewer people.

‘Starting with a programme of voluntary redundancy is our first step to reach this position.’

Cllr Picton said applications would be carefully considered to reduce the impact on services and to ensure essential services could still run.

The council is ‘working closely’ with the unions that represent its employees.
