Residents in local authority areas that will be affected by the summer bin strikes in Scotland have been asked to take ‘reasonable steps’ to avoid attracting pests.
Waste and recycling staff in 16 local authorities, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen, have voted to strike over a pay dispute.
The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) has warned residents to do all they can to prepare for the increase in pest activity that will follow.
‘Overflowing wheelie bins and black bags full of rubbish are a playground for pests, particularly rats, flies and wasps,’ said Natalie Bungay, technical manager at BPCA.
‘Disruption to kerbside bin collections increases the risk of pest activity, so it is important that householders consider additional steps such as taking any overflow to their local household waste and recycling centre.’
