Met Office launches climate tool for councils

The Met Office has launched a new tool to help councils adapt to the climate emergency.

The Local Authority Climate Service will enable councils to view and analyse Met Office climate data on a map and overlay this with other relevant information.

The Met Office said the government-funded tool would help local authorities ‘visualise climate challenges, explore climate projections and communicate a climate story specific to their local areas’.

Head of climate services Jason Lowe said: ‘Local authorities are key in building resilience to climate change in our communities across the UK.

‘It is vital that our climate projections are available in a format that makes them most accessible and useful for local authorities to apply in assessing risks and starting to plan how to best adapt to our changing climate.’

The launch comes as a report published today revealed that planning permission has been granted to build more than 7,000 homes in the areas at the highest risk of flooding in England.
