Merseyside household waste strikes called off

Strike action planned by 180 Veolia workers at 22 Merseyside household waste sites have been called off after an improved pay offer was accepted.

The two-year pay deal secured by the Unite union will give workers a 10 per cent pay rise backdated for the financial year 2022/23 and an 8.4 per cent increase for 2023/24.

The lowest paid workers will also receive a one-off payment of £375.

The planned strike involving 180 workers was announced last month and was due to run from 28-31 December and 2-7 January. Further action was planned from 15 January.

The strikes were suspended while workers were balloted on a revised pay offer, which resulted in agreement this week.

A Veolia spokesperson said: ‘Unite members have accepted Veolia’s pay and conditions offer that recognises the hard work of our teams who deliver essential public services for the community.’

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: ‘Unite is totally focused on defending and improving our members jobs, pay and conditions.’
