A bid to secure a review of business rates in the House of Lords has failed.

Lib Dem local government spokesperson Baroness Pinnock was among those to put forward amendments to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill seeking a review of the system and options for the tax's replacement.

She said the current system was 'flawed and fails to reflect modern business practices,’ highlighting the disparity between warehousing and high street shops amid the rise of online shopping.

Baroness Pinnock labelled measures in the Non-Domestic Rates Bill, such as more frequent valuations as ‘just tweaks to a complex set of business taxation that is in desperate need of fundamental reform’.
