A number of councils have received assistance from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) after their websites were targeted by the pro-Russia hacking group Noname05716.

Tameside Council and Salford City Council were both reportedly affected by what are known as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which flood websites with traffic.

A spokesperson for Salford City Council said their website is currently not working ‘due to technical issues.’

A spokesperson for the NCSC confirmed they have ‘provided guidance’ to affected local authorities.

‘Whilst DDoS attacks are relatively low in sophistication and impact, they can cause disruption by preventing legitimate users from accessing online services,’ they said.

‘Organisations are encouraged to familiarise themselves with our actionable Denial of Service guidance to support the prevention and mitigation of such attacks.’
