Councils across Yorkshire and the Humber have linked up to launch a campaign to promote healthy relationships at Christmas among residents in their area.

The festive promotional push is taking place due to a spike in domestic violence and conflict at this time of year.

A total of 14 councils are involved in a joint campaign through their Relationships Matter initiative, their website that provides advice to families and couples on positive communication.

This website also includes specific tips on managing relationships at Christmas after a breakup and agreeing plans when children are involved.

Trigger points of conflict, including parenting issues, addiction problems, job concerns and money worries are also detailed.

In addition, radio adverts will run on local radio throughout December through the councils’ campaign.

‘While conflict happens throughout the year, the Christmas period can put added pressures and strain on families,’ said Cllr Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education at East Riding of Yorkshire, one of the councils involved.

She added: ‘Relationships Matter provides some good tips for families and couples, whether together or separated.

‘We know that children are affected by how adults communicate with each other, and positive communication will help children feel secure and loved.’

The councils warn that one in five married or cohabiting couples are in relationships classified as ‘distressed’.

According to domestic abuse survivors’ charity Solace, calls to its helpline soar by two thirds at Christmas.
