Locals opposed to a solar panel project on the Hampshire-Berkshire border are attempting to stop it by arguing it could breach the local council’s anti-slavery commitments.
An opponent of the Strattons Farm scheme recently submitted an objection which highlights an amendment to the Great British Energy Bill that bans panels made using slave labour.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s obligations under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 also require the local authority to ensure its supply chains are free of human-trafficking.
Leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Cllr Paul Harvey, said the council was ‘committed to ensuring its own activities and supply chains are free from forced labour and human trafficking.’
However, he added that the Strattons Farm project was not a council scheme, and that the council had ‘no authority’ over other organisations’ supply chains and procurement.
‘The council can only consider the current planning application in accordance with planning policy and national planning laws.’
