Unreliable parking ticket machines in Rugby will be replaced as part of the council’s mission to regenerate the town centre.

Rugby Borough Council said it would also cover the 20p ‘convenience charge’ added to payments via the RingGo app for at least a year.

With its pay and display machines becoming increasingly unreliable, the local authority agreed to replace half the machines in its ten town centre car parks, so that each car park will have a new machine that only accepts card payments and an older version that takes coins.

The council’s portfolio holder for regulation and safety, Claire Edwards, said: ‘We want to offer residents and visitors a choice when paying for parking in the town centre, and while many motorists have embraced the “cashless” payment option provided by RingGo, we know many people still prefer to pay by card or cash.’

The project will cost £88,000, to be funded from borrowing, while the cost of running parking services will increase by £7,000.

Councillors also agreed to delegate some powers over parking to a chief officer, enabling car park opening times to be extended and discounted parking to be offered to support town centre events.
