Proposals to save £12m a year by axing hundreds of job posts will be considered by councillors in Hertfordshire next week.

On Monday, the county council’s employment committee will be asked to authorise plans to remove almost 400 full time equivalent posts.

Around 150 of these posts are vacant, while 242 are occupied.

But 99 new posts would also be created, meaning a total of 143 potential redundancies, according to a report to the committee.

Hertfordshire County Council previously said it would avoid compulsory redundancies wherever possible. It now says they are ‘inevitable’ to make required savings.

It has estimated that the job cuts could save £12.3m a year from 2025-26.

Unspecified further ‘efficiencies’ of £2.5m bring the council closer to its goal of saving £16m annually through employment measures.

If approved, the proposals would be implemented from December following a staff consultation.
