Nearly 150 council employees in Greenwich are striking this week over the local authority’s plans to reduce their pay.

The London borough council did a pay benchmarking exercise and plans to cut salaries for repairs staff over four years.

The plans would see some employees lose nearly £17,000 from their salary by the fourth year, according to trade union Unite.

Workers have been on the picket line 10 and 11 June, following industrial action in May.

Unite regional officer Mary Summers said: ‘That the council is trying to slash our members' wages is unconscionable and Unite simply won't stand for it.

‘Unite has made clear it will not enter into bargaining to cut pay,’ she added.

Royal Borough of Greenwich Council said some repairs staff had salaries ‘well above’ the industry average, in some cases salaries above £100,000, because of a historic bonus arrangement.

The authority said that after six months of negotiations with unions, it received an ‘unreasonable, unaffordable and frankly unrealistic’ offer.

A council spokesperson said: ‘While we respect the union’s right to ballot for strike action, we would very much welcome a return to reasonable discussions.’
