Hertsmere Borough Council has backed plans for an 85-acre data centre in Hertfordshire.
The council has emphasised that the project will boost local growth, providing digital infrastructure opportunities, as well as supporting its film and television sector.
The £3.9bn scheme is being funded by digital infrastructure company Equinix, with the aim of completing the project by 2030.
As well as delivering compute capacity of 250 megawatts to the UK’s infrastructure, the data centre is expected to create 2,500 construction jobs and 200 permanent positions.
According to an exclusive in Sky News, the project will also involve the use of 100% renewable energy by 2030.
Cllr Jeremy Newmark, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council and vice-chair of Hertfordshire Growth Board said the ‘critical national infrastructure’ will be a ‘game-changer’ for the area.
He added: ‘This is a pivotal moment for Hertfordshire. It reflects our commitment to growth, innovation, skills and high-quality jobs, promising lasting value for residents and businesses.’
