A power outage that has affected Nottingham City Council’s core IT systems and phonelines since last Thursday was caused by a ‘once in a lifetime event,’ engineers report.

An investigation has revealed that the likely cause of the outage was a failure within the electrical safety circuit of the high voltage switchgear at the council’s headquarters.

External engineers told the council that this was a ‘once in a lifetime event that they have never seen before.’

The council’s chief executive, Sajeeda Rose, said: ‘Unexpected disruptions like these test our ability to adapt, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible resilience, patience, and professionalism colleagues have all shown in response to this unexpected challenge.’
