Council leader: Regional funding inequalities are scandalous

A West Midlands council leader has branded regional funding inequalities ‘scandalous’.

Speaking at a select committee hearing, Wolverhampton City Council leader Cllr Roger Lawrence claimed that for every £10 of Arts Council funding spent in London, the organisation spent about 4p in Birmingham.

Cllr Lawrence said: ‘We have to challenge some of the distributional issues that we know exist.

‘We do need to get a balance between London and the South East and the rest of our economy.

‘It is about finding that level of balance.

‘We need to find a way of doing that that will benefit both London and the South East and the rest of the country.’

Wolverhampton Council is cutting 2,000 jobs as it tries to find savings of £66.7m.
