More than 100 employees at Cornwall Council could be made redundant in the run up to Christmas because of ‘chronic underfunding’ by the central government, a trade union has said.

The council’s draft revenue budget for 2025/26 has set out plans for saving £48.6m, which include the proposed jobs cuts.

Affected staff will undergo a 45-day formal consultation, due to be completed by April 2025.

UNISON South West regional officer Emily Gallagher said announcing the redundancies just before Christmas was ‘a heavy blow’ for Cornwall Council staff and their families.

She added: ‘The real reason behind these redundancies is the chronic underfunding of local authorities by central government over the past decade and more.

‘It’s completely unacceptable that council employees are being made to bear the burden from financial chaos they didn’t cause.’
