Cllr Eamonn O'Brien has been nominated to become the next chair of the Local Government Association (LGA), following the conclusion of internal elections within the LGA Labour Group.
The nomination comes after current chair Cllr Louise Gittins announced on 3 June that she will step down from the role on 7 July. The LGA paid tribute to Gittins for her cross-party leadership over the past two years.
Labour's right to nominate the chair follows the confirmation of the LGA's political proportionality after the local elections of 7 May, in which the party retained its position as the largest group on the LGA Board.
Under the LGA's Articles of Association, the largest political group holds the right to put forward a candidate for the chair.
The formal election of O'Brien, the leader of Bury Council, will take place at the LGA General Assembly on 7 July, with Gittins continuing to fulfil all duties of the role until then.
