Celebrities, including Rosie Jones and Sir Stephen Fry, have spoken out against cuts to social security, arguing they will force disabled people to become dependent on food banks.
The Government this week published proposals to reform the welfare system by restricting access to disability payments in an effort to save £5bn a year by 2030.
The anti-poverty charity Trussell warned the cuts will have a ‘significant impact’ on people who are already facing hardship.
The charity said 75% of people referred to one of their food banks is living in a household where someone is disabled.
Comedian Rosie Jones, who has cerebral palsy and is cited by Trussell, commented that disabled people are ‘scared of what the future holds’ if there are cuts to disability payments.
Sir Stephen Fry added: ‘Cuts should be for people who can best afford them, not for disabled people, who are amongst the most vulnerable and overlooked of all our population.’
