Most people think care workers should be appreciated more and regard footballers and TV stars as overvalued, a survey has revealed.
Three quarters of people answering the poll by not-for-profit housing and care provider Anchor said they thought care workers deserved more appreciation.
Other underappreciated jobs highlighted included cleaners, waste collectors and teachers.
Premiership footballers were considered the most overvalued, closely followed by reality TV stars, hip-hop artists and city traders.
Anchor warned of an 'alarming' shortfall of care workers and urged a change in attitudes towards carers.
It said a shortfall in carers was expected to reach 718,000 by 2025 as people live longer and predicted it would have to try and fill more than 2,000 job vacancies in England in the next year.
Jane Ashcroft of Anchor said: 'Perceptions about what a career in care entails are out of date and it’s time that changed.
She added: 'The overwhelming majority of carers are hard-working, skilled, and committed. At a time when more and more of us will need support in later life, we should celebrate that.'
