England’s health and social care regulator has announced that Sir Julian Hartley will be appointed as its new chief executive.
Sir Julian will leave his role as chief executive of NHS Providers to join the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which the health secretary recently described as ‘not fit for purpose’.
Wes Streeting had said he was ‘stunned by the extent of the failings’ identified in an interim report into the CQC by Dr Penny Dash. A final report is due this autumn.
Mr Streeting said: ‘I’m confident that Julian will provide the leadership staff in the CQC need to address this crisis, improve patient safety, and restore confidence in the regulator.’
CQC chair Ian Dilks admitted that the regular had ‘much work to do’ rebuilding trust with the public, providers and its own staff.
Sir Julian said: ‘I am delighted to be joining CQC at a time when effective regulation which supports improvement across the health and care sector and good, safe care for people who use services has never been more important.’
His start date is yet to be confirmed.
