Blackpool Council is considering plans to introduce fluoridated milk into its free breakfast scheme for more than 8,000 children in a bid to reduce the risk of tooth decay.
Figures show that around 400 children in Blackpool have their teeth taken out under general anaesthetic each year, with nearly half of all twelve year olds having at least one decayed, missing or filled tooth.
A study last year also showed that children in Blackpool have lower than normal levels of fluoride in their bodies.
The council said fluoridated milk could be added to its free school breakfast scheme at no extra cost to the taxpayer.
‘Unfortunately the state of Blackpool’s dental health is very poor,’ said cllr Graham Cain, cabinet secretary for Blackpool Council.
‘The scheme will be available to all primary school children but parents will have the option to opt out if they wish.
‘This is a bold and positive step and one that I think will benefit our children in the long run.’
