A self-guiding robot capable of identifying and repairing potholes using artificial intelligence (AI) technology could help tackle the blight of potholes.

Developed by UK tech startup Robotiz3d, the AI tech ‘is the first autonomous technology of this kind developed specifically to tackle the pothole crisis’, CEO Lisa Layzell told the Daily Mirror.

Transport secretary Mark Harper confirmed last week the allocations of an £8.3bn plan to resurface England’s pothole-marked road system, set out in the wake of HS2 cuts.

Councils will also be required to publish lists of the roads they plan to resurface as a condition of this funding and could see their funds cut if expectations are not met.

As roads minister Guy Opperman said: ‘To ensure this investment is truly transformational for road users up and down the country, we are committed to holding councils to account to make sure that taxpayers’ money is well spent and properly fixes roads.’
