West Northamptonshire Council has asked staff to consider voluntary redundancy, flexible retirement and reduced working hours in a bid to cut costs.
The unitary authority said rising costs and increasing demand for statutory services were putting significant pressure on its budgets for this year and next.
It said it was ‘progressing a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency of the organisation’, with a focus on how its teams were structured.
Last week, staff were briefed and told how they could express an interest in the options, which the council said would be ‘progressed based on business needs’.
West Northamptonshire's cabinet member for human resources, Mike Hallam, said: ‘This is very much an exploratory process, and no decisions will be made without thorough consideration of the impact on services and the community.’
The outcomes from the engagement with staff will form part of the council’s draft budget, which is set to go to councillors in December.
