Birmingham City Council’s mammoth equal pay bill could rise further if it fails to meet a tight deadline to fix the issue.

The £750m equal pay bill that emerged last month relies on the council completing a job evaluation study, creating a new pay structure and implementing new terms and conditions by 1 April 2025.

A report to senior councillors warned several other authorities have failed to reach agreement with trade unions, and have had to resort to dismissing and re-employing staff to resolve the issue.

It comes as Birmingham wrestles with an in-year budget shortfall, which is now projected to hit £87m in 2023-24, rising to £165m in 2024-25.
