The agreement of a deal with Universal to open a new theme park in Bedford – billed as one of the largest in Europe – has been welcomed as a ‘landmark moment’.

The Government estimates the multi-million-pound park and resort will create 20,000 jobs during the construction period and a further 8,000 once it opens in 2031.

Mayor Tom Wootton described the decision as a ‘landmark moment for Bedford Borough.’

‘Universal’s decision to proceed with its theme park and resort in the UK brings exciting opportunities to our doorstep – thousands of jobs, new training and career paths, and a huge boost for local businesses.’

The project has received agreement in principle from the Government to move forward, pending planning approval for the 476-acre site.

Universal expects the site to generate nearly £50bn for the economy by 2055, with 8.5 million visitors expected in the first year.

Laura Church, chief executive of Bedford Borough Council, said the park and resort will be ‘one of the largest employers in the region.’

‘We have been working closely with Universal Destinations & Experiences for over two years, in partnership with national Government and regional stakeholders, and it’s great to see the progress made today.’
