Young people leaving care in Birmingham will not have to pay council tax following an independent commission aimed at tackling child poverty in the city.
The move was one of several recommendations which the Children's Society estimates could help 1,300 young people.
The city council will waive council tax for care leavers under the age of 25 from next April following the report by the Birmingham Child Poverty Commission.
The Children’s Society has been working with councils to urge them to waive the charge for care leavers under 25.
Its chief executive, Matthew Reed, who chaired the commission, said: 'It is encouraging that councillors from across the political spectrum in Birmingham have welcomed the commission’s recommendations.
'I’m delighted that an agreement has already been reached to exempt care leavers under the age of 25 from council tax from next year because we know that young people leaving the care system can face real financial challenges.'
