UKIP councillor suspended over claims he made racist and homophobic comments

A UKIP councillor has been suspended just days after he was elected over allegedly making racist and homophobic comments.

David Small, who was elected for the Church Hill Ward at Redditch Borough Council, is being investigated for allegedly calling gay people such as Sir Elton John and Clare Balding ‘perverts’ and referring to African immigrants as ‘scroungers’ on his facebook page.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Politics show, UKIP MEP James Carver said there would be a ‘fair and thorough’ investigation into the claims.

The Facebook page has since been removed and Mr Small will now face a disciplinary hearing.

The suspension comes after UKIP achieved significant gains in the local elections.
