Twelve children, young people and families centres in Leicester are ‘under threat’, warns UNISON.
Leicester City Council is consulting on measures aimed at reducing costs due to ongoing reductions in government funding.
The council is seeking to make savings of around £550,000 per year.
In 2017, the city council was forced to cut the number of local children’s centres from 23 to 12.
UNISON Leicester City assistant branch secretary Karen Wharton said that if the current plans go ahead there would only be six centres left.
‘New mums, babies and vulnerable young people shouldn’t have to pay the price for the local government funding crisis,’ she said.
The council has been contacted for comment.
