A 20mph speed limit has contributed to improved air quality in a local town, the Forest of Dean District Council has confirmed.
According to a council report, an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) had been introduced 15 years ago in Lydney due to ‘exceedances in the annual average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide’ based on UK targets.
However, as recommended by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the council has backed the decision to revoke Lydney’s AQMA due to the improvements in air quality for three consecutive years.
The report reveals that ‘multiple factors have contributed’ to the progress in the AQMA, including an increase in the use of low and ultra-low emission vehicles and the 20mph speed limit implemented.
Further reasons listed were a rise in the amount of people working from home and combustion engine technology advancements.
