Thousands of people flocked to central Birmingham on New Year’s Eve after false claims circulated online that there would be a fireworks display at midnight.

On Tuesday, Birmingham City Council warned residents on social media that rumours of pyrotechnics in Centenary Square were untrue, urging people not to travel into the city in hope of seeing the event.

West Midlands Police also issued a warning, with superintendent Emlyn Richards telling residents: ‘There are rumours online that a fireworks display will take place in Centenary Square but there isn’t a planned event this year.

‘We don’t want people travelling unnecessarily into the city centre tonight to be left disappointed after discovering the event isn’t taking place.’
