Thousands of social homes are being marketed on short-term let platforms like Airbnb, new research reveals.
An analysis by the Tenancy Fraud Forum estimates that 5,800 council houses are being sublet by tenants at a cost to the taxpayer of up to £244m.
Stephanie Toghill, vice-chair of the Tenancy Fraud Forum and a housing investigator at Islington Council, told the Telegraph that councils face challenges getting the data they need to crack down on illegal subletting from online platforms. She added it is ‘really frustrating, because there are other bodies that do it all the time’.
