Social work infographics reveal ‘difficult’ reality of the profession

Two new infographics have revealed the ‘varied and complicated’ working lives of social workers in a public awareness push.

The illustrations today released by the College of Social Work form part of a campaign to tackle mounting negative publicity about the industry and highlight the ‘vital contribution’ it makes to society.

Fears were raised that the social work profession could face even greater difficultires if the public is not helped to understand the challenges it faces.

A timeline infographic published by the college details changes to roles over the past five years and aims to highlight the frequent reorganisation faced by the workforce.

The second diagram reveals the challenges created by today’s working environment, including pressure on mental health services, rising caseloads and under investment.

Chief executive of the college, Annie Hudson, said: ‘Every day, social workers do a vital and difficult job, covering a wide range of complex tasks and roles. However, understanding of the job outside of the profession is sadly limited.

‘For social work to thrive as a skilled profession and continue to support people to have fulfilling and good lives, we must foster a better understanding of the work we do and the challenges we face.

‘We need to reach out to the public, the media and, crucially, the next government. We want to see clear commitments to supporting, understanding and truly valuing social workers and the work they do to build strong and resilient communities.’
