Councils in England can no longer require veterans to have a connection to the local area to qualify for social housing, the Government confirmed today.
It said the new rules recognised the ‘unique’ challenges former members of the armed forces could face in building a connection to a local area.
Housing minister Matthew Pennycook told Parliament: ‘Having a connection to an area should not be a barrier to housing for those who put their lives on the line for our country.’
The regulations will come into force on 18 December.
Earlier this month, the Government announced it would provide an extra £3.5m to support veterans facing homelessness.
