Local authorities across Wales are set to receive a £30m funding boost from the Welsh Government to strengthen community-based social care services.
The investment, announced today, aims to help councils deliver timely social care assessments and expand the availability of care packages, directly tackling delays in hospital discharges.
Minister for Children and Social Care, Dawn Bowden, emphasised the importance of the funding for both individuals and the wider health system: ‘By investing in community-based support, we can help more people return home from hospital when they're medically ready and enable others to remain independent in their communities.
‘This will not only improve experiences for individuals but also help patient flow through our hospitals.’
Cllr Charlie McCoubrey, Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA)spokesperson for Health and Social Care, said: 'This funding is a welcome boost to help councils and the NHS work together so people can leave hospital as soon as they’re well enough, with the right care in place at home. It will make a real difference in easing pressures this winter and supporting people to recover in the best place for them.
'Social care teams are already working flat out, and while this investment will help in the short term, we need to keep building on it together to make sure services can meet rising demand in the years ahead.'
